A Legacy Born in Adventure
The story of Kraus yerba mate begins far from the lush forests of South America. In 1894, a young Austrian named Francisco (Franz) Kraus, adventurous and yearning for new horizons, left Europe and arrived in Argentina. Settling in the province of Misiones, a region celebrated for its rich soil and ideal conditions for yerba mate cultivation, Francisco laid the foundation for what would become a multi-generational family tradition.
Francisco and his wife Ulda built a life in Misiones and raised a large family. Their eldest son, Francisco José, planted his first yerba mate seedlings at just 13 years old. As he grew, he expanded his land, and with his own children—Juan Ángel and Roman—built up the family’s agricultural operations, tending soil, planting seeds, and learning the rhythms of the earth with their own hands.

Family Kraus
From Field to Process Innovation
What began as humble cultivation eventually grew into a small yet ambitious enterprise. The Kraus family sold crops locally, then constructed their own drying kilns and became independent producers rather than mere growers. Roman focused on farming life, while Juan Ángel—an inventive spirit—developed a new, smoke-free drying technique for yerba mate and tea. This approach, still used today, employs warm indirect air rather than open smoke to dry the leaves, yielding a cleaner flavor and more delicate aroma than many traditional mates.
Over time, the next generation—children of Juan Ángel and Roman—joined the family business, bringing renewed energy and helping to solidify Kraus’s presence in both national and international markets. Their commitment to organic farming, sustainable practices, and fair trade principles has shaped Kraus into more than a product, it’s a philosophy.

Roman and Juan Ángel
Roots in Misiones, Heart in Sustainability
Today Kraus yerba mate is cultivated in Colonia Santo Domingo Savio, near San Ignacio in Misiones province, in northeastern Argentina. This land, part of the historic Guaraní region where yerba mate has been valued for centuries, provides fertile ground for organic agriculture. The Kraus operation continues to uphold ecological balance, promoting biodiversity, natural pest control and soil health instead of chemical inputs.
Kraus also embraces ethical labour standards: it follows fair trade principles such as equitable pay, safe working conditions, and profit-sharing with workers. Certifications like organic, Fair Trade and Kosher underline the company’s commitment to responsible production.
Kraus Gaucho Despalada
Unlike many traditional Argentine yerba mates—often dried over wood smoke and bearing a robust, smoky character—Kraus offers a cleaner, smoother experience thanks to its unique drying process.
Flavor notes you might expect:
-
Mild and herbal: Kraus tends toward a gentle, earthy herbal profile rather than heavy smoke or intense bitterness.
-
Fresh and grassy: Its profile is closer to fresh greens or herbal tea than to charred wood, with lighter vegetal notes and a refreshing quality.
-
Aromatic clarity: Without smoke masking the leaves, the natural plant character of yerba mate comes through—sometimes floral, sometimes with subtle hints of grass or sweet herb.
Kraus’s range includes blends for beginners and seasoned drinkers alike—from Kraus Yerba Mate Pionero, known for its mild, harmonious taste, to more classic profiles like Kraus Gaucho or the pure, unstemmed leaf of KRAUS Organic Yerba Mate Pure Leaf. There’s also flavored options like Kraus Silvestre if you want a twist on the classic herb. Each variety carries the signature unsmoked character that defines the brand.
A Mate for Today’s World
Kraus yerba mate stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation: rooted in a century-old family legacy, yet shaped by modern organic practices and ethical standards. Its smooth, aromatic taste invites both newcomers and seasoned mate lovers to enjoy the drink in a fresh, balanced way—a cup that reflects respect for nature, heritage and shared moments.
